ODBC - Open DataBase Connectivity

ODBC is a standard that certain computer programs use to communicate with ODBC compliant databases like the one Premier uses.  By installing an ODBC driver or using a program with a built-in driver, you can pull data from the Premier database.  You can pull the data using wizards built-in into the program or by creating your own SQL statements.  There are some advantages and disadvantages to ODBC and Premier:

Advantages:

  • Allows you to use other programs to extract data without using DDE.
  • By using SQL, you can pull more data out than DDE.
  • You can use other programs to create reports.

Disadvantages:

  • Getting data out of custom fields isn't easy.
  • Due to security reasons, ODBC may be blocked from use.

Following are some programs that are ODBC compliant that are commonly used:

Require ODBC Driver:

  • Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access
  • Filemaker Pro
  • Crystal Reports

Java Based:

  • DBVisualizer
  • Oracle SQL Developer
